Leroy Whiteman Exhibit:

Leroy Whiteman works in many mediums including carved antler work, watercolor, bronze sculpture, rock carving and oil/acrylic.  Leroy is a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe.  He is regularly invited to art shows across the Nation.  In 2013 he was a featured artist at the Butte Folk Festival.  He was commissioned to create a piece for the movie An Unfinished Life with Robert Redford, Jennifer Lopez and Morgan Freeman.  In Cheyenne country Leroy frequently donates his art to support charitable causes.  Despite his success as an artist, Leroy says that he is first a horseman and artist second.  He raises horse, preferring paints, which inspired his signature piece "Colored Horses" (see photo below).  Horses and American Indians are major themes in his artwork.  Leroy trains horses for the Little Big Horn Battle reenactment. He participates in the reenactment and instructs young men in the history of the battle.  He trains horses for Indian Relay Teams as well and is proud of his Rock-n-Whiteman team which won the prestigious National Indian Relay Championship in Sheridan, Wyoming in both 2010 and 2011.  A former Tribal Council member, he writes a popular political column "The Infamous Leroy Whiteman" for A Cheyenne Voice newspaper.  A Korean Veteran, he was the "all Service Welter Weight Boxing Champion", a top soccer player in the United Kingdom and also a Golden Gloves Champion.  He is a Cheyenne Sun Dancer and retired as a mechanic from the Montana Power Company, Colstrip, Montana.  He has two daughters, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Leroy's artwork will be on display at SHAC until his closing reception on Thursday, May 11th.  Hours for viewing the Gallery are Monday - Friday from 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
